Umbria and spinning fishing
Umbria is a region rich in lakes, rivers and the ideal environment for spinning fishing. This fishing technique is based on using a fishing rod with a reel and lures instead of live bait. Spinning fishing is an exciting sport that offers numerous benefits. In Umbria there are numerous places where it is possible to practice it, such as Lake Trasimeno, Lake Bolsena and the Tiber river. If you are looking for a fun and relaxing way to spend your time in Umbria, spinning fishing is a great choice.
Where to practice spinning fishing in Umbria
If you happen to pass through Terni, I highly recommend everyone to take a trip to Lake Piediluco, a natural lake that is not very large, but certainly has very particular characteristics. Irregular in shape, it is characterized by several bends, each of which offers countless spots and creates very varied environments where you can attack fish at any time of the year.
The maximum depth of the lake is around 19 meters and there are many species present in its waters, including chub, eels, carp, tench, amur, whitefish, trout, king pike and royal perch. Today we will focus mainly on fishing for two last species just mentioned.
First of all we must remember that the lake is a special conservation area for pike so there is a regulation to be respected for those who want to undermine exocides which provides for the immediate release of the fish, use only and exclusively of artificial bait with single hook and without barb, steel cable or fluorocarbon leader (minimum 0.90mm) of length no less than 35 cm and prohibition on the use of boga grip, for all other fish the normal regional regulations are in force.
Benefits of spinning fishing
Let's now move on to the practical part, as regards the royal perch, a species present in generous quantities in the lake, with the right technique and the right bait we will certainly get some great satisfaction both in quantity and in size, but let's see which baits to use and how to organize yourself for the search for prey.
As bait we can easily use both rubbers and small minnows and depending on the season we will target the perches in different spots.
Fishing from the shore in the summer period we will be able to find them near the shore, perhaps near the reed beds present in large quantities along the entire shore of the lake. As a technique you can fish with classic spinning or even with dropshot, both of which will be very valid choices and funny.
In the reel we will mount a 0.18 / 0.20 monofilament such as the Kolpo Illusion Super Soft Superior 150 meters and as regards silicone baits we can use small shad type rubbers, sickles and similar, excellent results have been obtained with the Yamashiro Vining, tested both in winter and summer, both from the shore and from the boat, they can be mounted on small jig heads or on our dropshot rig, occasionally giving us some surprise attacks from the pikes. Instead, if we want to have a more classic approach we will go for a minnow such as the Yamashiro MR70 Minnow, small fish with very varied and captivating colors which could also lead us to encounters with the lake trout or chub that populate the lake, the same goes for the classic rotating spoons perhaps the latter weighing no more than 4 g.
In winter, however, we have to organize ourselves in a slightly different way, perhaps preferring the dropshot technique, looking for perch no longer near the shore, but in deeper waters, moving the bait more slowly, it will become search fishing, but it is It is precisely in this period that the largest prey is caught!
Let's now move on to the king pike, given the regulations in force in the lake many fishermen prefer to fly fish it using streamers, but just as many fishermen use the classic methods, here we can indulge ourselves with regards to the choice of our bait perhaps switching from a generously sized rubber like the Abu Garcia Beast Paddle 170 or hard lure like the Berkley Zilla Jointed Jerkbait 13.5cm 42 gr, the classic wavy ones are also very profitable.
Fishing will be much easier with the help of a boat since some of the best spots cannot be reached from the shore, but even from the shore there are splendid places full of water lilies and reeds where you can hunt this splendid predator.
In both winter and summer it is still possible to find them near the shore, although with the arrival of the cold they may move away into deeper waters to follow the schools of forage fish.
Final thoughts
In conclusion we can say that it is really worth carving out some time and paying a visit to this wonderful lake, you will certainly leave satisfied and regenerated.
