Fishing in Trentino on the Noce stream
In the last publication on the Pescalacca blog we addressed the wonderful Oasis of San Giuliano in Basilicata . Today we return to talking about freshwater fishing, focusing on a particularly renowned spot in the Alps, which has the same name as a stream in Basilicata (it may seem like it was done on purpose, but it's just a coincidence). We present to you the wonderful Torrente Noce in Trentino: a fantastic watercourse, with a thousand facets, an ideal home for spinning and fly fishermen and why not... also for trout fishermen! So let's pack our bags, put in our lures, rod and reel and set off to discover Noce.
The Noce torrent, from its source to its mouth in the Adige
The Noce is, together with the Avisio, among the main streams of Trentino. It originates in Val di Pejo, then continues its course crossing Val di Sole, entering Val di Non where it is blocked by the Santa Giustina Dam and Lake Mollaro. Subsequently it continues its journey towards the valley, meeting the Piana Rotaliana and, finally, the Adige river, becoming its tributary with an important tribute of water. As you can imagine, the character of Noce changes depending on the slopes: narrow and impetuous, then fast but wider, finally blocked by man, slow, with wide banks, easily accessible, and finally impetuous again due to a hydroelectric power plant which periodically releases a lot of water during energy production operations. In short, many faces, multiple sides of the same stream which offers different possibilities to the many tourists who in summer want to compete with respectable adversaries such as marble trout, brown trout and grayling.
Water management and fishing regulation of the Noce stream
The Noce stream in Trentino is managed by three associations with three different regulations and concession fishing areas. The first is the Solandri fishermen's association (Val di Sole), the Val di Non Fishermen's Association and the Trentini Amateur Fishermen's Association. Navigating the various regulations may seem difficult, but in reality it isn't, especially because there is a lot of openness to fishing holidays on the part of tourist operators. However, it is necessary to start from a simple area, easy to access, where perhaps you can meet some other fishermen to ask for advice tested in the field. We therefore recommend carrying out your first fishing trip in one of the best-known stretches of Trentino, which has simple rules and easily available daily permits.
The zones are D1-D2 (ordinary regime) and DK (no-kill) under concession to the Apdt of Trento, which fall within the municipalities of Mezzolombardo and Mezzocorona. Both require the purchase of a permit with a cost of €20 per day, also available for those who do not have a type B license. The opening of both sections is set for the first Sunday in March, while the closing official date is September 30th, although in recent years the DK section has seen an extension until October 31st, still under a no-kill regime. In the D1 and D2 zones you can catch up to 4 trout per day, while in the DK the immediate release of the prey is mandatory. Furthermore, again in the DK area, fishing is exclusively fly and spinning with barbless hooks, artificial baits such as spoons and minnows (silicones are not allowed). In case of doubts or concerns, the Apdt of Trento is always available via email at info@apdt.it or by telephone on 0461.930093. Be careful of possible floods on the D2 stretch due to the activity of the Mezzocorona power station: sudden increases in the flow of the stream could occur!
How to fish by spinning or by touch on the Noce
The Noce stream is a paradise for those who love spinning, fly fishing and classic trout fishing by touch. It alternates full days with dry days, increasing the sense of challenge towards the trout, which makes it magical. For those unfamiliar with it, we recommend approaching the aforementioned sections of the Noce stream by spinning fishing, with a medium action rod, of at least 10/30 grams, which will have the task of casting spoons or minnows weighing between 9 and 15 grams (depending on the current). On the reel, a valid 3000, we suggest spooling a 0.20/0.22 braid or nylon. Those who prefer, however, to practice touch fishing with the remote control, will have to bring with them at least an 8 meter, if not also a 10 or 11.50 meter. This is because the holes are large, so to probe them adequately it will be necessary to open the barrel to the maximum. The line will require the use of lead pellets or 15/20 gram pendulums, with flutters of at least 80 centimeters of 0.20.
