Fishing in Trentino on the Chiese river
Among the first fishing spots that come to mind when talking about Trentino are the Avisio, the Noce, the Sarca, the Adige. Excellent outdoor gyms for trout fishing with spinning, fly and remote control, which we have already described on the Pescalccacca blog. However, those looking for still valuable but less frequented waters, especially during the summer period, can count on a vast territorial offer made up of smaller courses. Among these, in western Trentino, there is a river that originates from the Adamello, runs through a wild valley, flows into a lake and continues its journey towards Lombardy. So let's talk about the Chiese river in Valdaone. Less in the spotlight but a harbinger of interest for modern sport fishing. Let's find out together!
Geography of the Chiese river
The origins of the Chiese river lie in the sources of Val di Fumo, on the Adamello massif. The landscape is simply heavenly: crystal clear waters, green meadows, uncontaminated nature and scenery similar to those of Canada. A real corner of North America in Trentino! As the Chiese continues its course, it meets the Valdaone (or Val di Daone) and the so-called Valle del Chiese, passing through Storo and finally flowing into Lake Idro. During these passages, the Chiese river is blocked by some dams for the production of hydroelectric energy. These dams proved to be a real salvation during the difficult weather conditions of October 2018: the fish population was preserved and the structures withstood the fury of the waters due to torrential rains. This therefore confirms the good conditions of Chiese despite the problems encountered elsewhere in Trentino, due to natural disasters in the past. Having said that, let's move on to the intrinsic characteristics of the Chiese.
The trout of the Chiese river
The Chiese that flows in Trentino has undergone few environmental changes at the hands of man. At first glance, in fact, one notices that in various points of the Chiese they have never been "touched" by hydraulic works, such as the arrangement of the embankments or the caging of the river bed. This has led to the proliferation of native or quasi-native fauna, made up of marble trout, hybrids and brown trout of notable beauty, although not particularly corpulent in size due mainly to the restricted spaces which do not favor the achievement of dizzying sizes. What matters, at least in the Trentino stretch of the Chiese, is to admire how much nature still manages to give: trout with intact fins, with brightly colored liveries and rather bright red "dots". This means, in other words, trout in excellent health, fighting beyond belief, despite their small size.
Regulations for fishing on the Chiese river

Have fun fishing ultra-lightly
Forget extra large trout. For once we would like you to discover the pleasure of fishing the wild trout of the past, which reach a maximum of 30 centimeters but release an unexpected force, greater than the weight/size ratio of the prey. To fish on the Chiese river, a spinning rod of maximum two meters, in two pieces or one piece, is sufficient. The action can vary from 2 to 10 grams but even 0.5/5 gram finesse rods are certainly fine. The reel will be small in size, i.e. a 1,000 or 2,000 at most. We will fish with 4/6 gram spoons, with a single hook, possibly barbless: an obligatory choice to enjoy numerous fights without fatally wounding the prey.
